What is the procedure?
An anesthetic cream is applied to the area for 20 minutes prior to injection which helps to numb the area to be treated and reduces pain when the needle is inserted into the skin, whereas a small amount of lignocaine is injected into the lip area to help to numb them prior to treatment. Treatment times can vary from around 30 minutes to an hour, and recovery time can be from a few hours to a few days. However, you can return straight back to work after treatment with dermal fillers. Depending on the type of filler used, and the area treated, top up treatments are usually required to maintain the effect.
Risks and Complications
The treatment is totally safe and there are no long time complications or risks, however there are some temporary complications such as slight bleeding after the needle has been inserted into the skin treatments around the nose or lip areas are usually more painful, mild bruising, redness and swelling that may also occur around the site of injection. These signs are temporary and will vanish completely within a day or two.
Post treatment care
- Iced water soaks or ice packs will help to reduce swelling
- Pain medication will be advised for any pain after the procedure
- Bruising and swelling should go down after a couple of days

Yes, when prescribed by a properly qualified and trained doctor and injected in an appropriate medical setting, dermal fillers are safe.
- What potential risks are associated with cosmetic dermal fillers?
Very rare Risks include hematoma, infection and necrosis or skin loss is possible.
- Can I be allergic to dermal filler?
Only dermal fillers derived from animal sources have a risk of allergy.

No, dermal fillers should not be used to rejuvenate the hands, injected into the breasts or injected into any part of the body other than the face. In select cases, a scar, cellulite dimple or other limited depression can be treated with dermal fillers for temporary improvement.

Dermal fillers for cosmetic purposes should not be administered to anyone under 18.
- Can dermal fillers be used on skin of color?
Hyaluronic acid fillers are appropriate for skin of color, as these are colorless gels that should not be visible under the skin or alter the skin color.
- Will I be able to feel the dermal filler once injected into my skin?
In the first few days after injection, the treated area may feel a little firm; however, this should improve rapidly.
