FAQS

Should I pierce my ears?

Ear piercing is a procedure done mainly for cosmetic reasons. There are no health reasons to get your ears pierced and most people get their ears pierced due to personal or cultural preferences.

What is the best age at which to get my ears pierced?

There is no medical evidence to support any age restrictions. Whatever age you decide on, it’s essential that you choose where you have the procedure done carefully.

Where should I get my ears or my child’s ears pierced?

Medical Ear Piercing provide a safe, hygienic and professional alternative to mall kiosks and tattoo parlors. Our medical professionals are experienced in painless, aseptic techniques, and provide quality services to newborns, seniors and every age in between.

What are the risks of ear piercing?

Infection – Anytime the skin is broken there is the risk of infection. We use sterile techniques to prevent this. We provides detailed instruction on after-care for the ear lobes. Our technique is bloodless and our single-use sterile cartridges eliminate cross- contamination.

Pain – The procedure causes minimal pain. However, since we are physician owned and supervised, we are able to perform your ear piercing with topical anesthesia if you so prefer.

Allergic reactions – Allergies to nickel and other components of earrings can occur. At Medical Ear Piercing , we use medical grade materials and earrings to prevent allergies.

Keloids – Keloids are excessive scar tissue that form around a wound. Keloids may occur after ear piercing, and are 80% more likely to occur if ears are pierced after age 11. Other risk factors for keloids include dark skin, previous keloid formation, and nickel containing earrings.

My kids want to have their ears pierced. I have heard that ear piercing can cause nickel allergies. Is that true?

The ear piercing procedure as such cannot cause an allergic reaction to nickel. It is the material that some earrings are made of which can cause these reactions. All earrings made of metal contain nickel more or less — even gold and silver. The only ear piercing earrings that do not contain any nickel are the ones made of Medical Plastic. Therefore we recommend that your kids get their ears pierced with Medical Plastic or the next best thing – medical grade titanium).

Is gold less allergenic than titanium and therefore better for ear piercing?

Nickel is sometimes used as a metal hardener, even in gold earrings. Also all metals can be contaminated by nickel . Medical grade titanium is your best choice for a metal based earring because it is > 99% nickel free and is least likely to leak any nickel into the skin. Please note that medical grade titanium is a much better grade than the titanium available in other earrings.

I had my ears pierced two weeks ago and now I have an infection in one of the piercings. What should I do?

It is difficult to give an exact answer without knowing the exact condition of the ear but as general advice: – If the infection is in the soft part of the ear (earlobe), With the earring in place, apply a warm compress for about 3 minutes, 4 times a day to increase blood flow to the area. Clean with an antiseptic solution and apply a topical antibiotic cream such as neosporin. If no improvement in 24 hours – seek medical attention.

– If the infected piercing is in the firm part of the ear (cartilage) – remove the earring, clean with an antiseptic and see a physician immediately as infection in cartilage needs urgent medical attention. Other symptoms that need urgent medical attention are fever, redness spreading from the piercing and a very swollen ear.

I was told that a thicker needle is better than a thinner needle for ear piercing. Is that so?

A thicker needle has got a very important advantage; there is more room, which makes it easier to switch to normal earrings after the healing period.

With a thin ear piercing needle there is a greater risk that you will scratch the walls of the piercing when switching earrings, causing a new wound and hence run the risk of getting an infection.

Can I be allergic to plastic?

Allergies can develop to practically any substance including plastic materials. However, the medical grade plastic used in our earrings has been used extensively on a regular basis in and on humans for more than 35 years. In the medical literature, There are no reports in medical literature of these plastics causing allergy. We carry latex free gloves upon request, for those with latex allergy.

Why shouldn’t I twist the earrings during the healing period?

Twisting the earrings cause rebruising of the newly forming canal and therefore increases healing time. Constant hadling of the ear piercing, especially without careful cleaning of hands and earlobe, can result in an infection. Our medical grade earrings are skin friendly and should not embed into skin.

For how long should I wear the ear piercing earrings?

We recommend that you wait for at least six weeks before you remove the ear piercing earring.

How do I remove the ear piercing earrings?

When the time comes to change the earrings, we recommend that you take out the ear piercing earring after cleaning your hands and ear lobes. The earrings can be removed by holding the front of the earing steady between the thumb and index finger of one hand, and with your other hand, and prying the plastic backing off by bending it backward to enlarge the earring receiving hole and causing the earring to pop out of it. To understand the prying action, simulate the action required to open a plastic container by prying open the plastic lid. Clean ear thoroughly and immediately reinsert same earring or another skin friendly earring. Do not leave the piercing without an earring, for any period of time, as the piercing will shrink and the diameter of the hole will be quickly reduced and may even close, especially during the first year.
